Die Arbeitswerttheorie ist ein Ansatz aus der klassischen Nationalökonomie. Danach wird der Wert einer Ware durch die Arbeitszeit bestimmt, die zu deren Produktion gesellschaftlich notwendig ist. Außerdem muss die Ware einen Gebrauchswert aufweisen. Ausgehend von diesen Voraussetzungen werden in einer arbeitsteiligen Warenwirtschaft sowohl die Austauschverhältnisse bestimmt als auch das Wirtschaftswachstum und die Verteilung des Einkommens, und zwar je nach dessen Entstehungsart auf die unterschiedlichen Klassen von Einkommensbeziehern. Die Arbeitswerttheorie gilt als wirtschaftspolitisch links und insofern als Gegensatz zur Grenznutzentheorie. Die AWT wird von Ökonomen unterschiedlich bewertet. Auf der einen Seite wird sie für ?falsch? oder ?tot? erklärt. Dahingegen verteidigen fast alle Marxisten die AWT in der marxschen Form, wenn doch ihre präzise Explikation auch hier äußerst umstritten ist. Einige Nicht-Marxisten leiten die Arbeitswertlehre in Wachstumsmodellen unter bestimmten Annahmen her, ohne dies als Bestätigung Marxscher Theorie anzusehen.
