Ein Auftrag ist eine Aufforderung an eine andere Person, eine bestimmte Handlung vorzunehmen. Dabei ist es unbeachtlich, ob es sich um eine Verrichtung mit oder ohne ein dingliches Ergebnis handelt. Insoweit muss zwischen einem Dienstauftrag und einem Herstellungsauftrag zunächst nicht unterschieden werden. Typisch für den Auftrag ist die Rückmeldung des Ausführenden an den Beauftragenden. Vom klassischen, dem römischen Recht nachempfundenen Auftrag als unentgeltliche Aufforderung, ist das viel umfassendere Verständnis des Auftragsverhältnisses im schweizerischen Obligationenrecht zu unterscheiden.
