Ein Ausziehgleis ist vorteilhaft, weil es das Rangieren unabhängig vom Zugverkehr ermöglicht. In Bahnhöfen ohne Ausziehgleis muss eine Rangierfahrt zum Verteilen der Wagen in mehrere Bahnhofsgleise oder auch nur zum Umsetzen in ein anderes Gleis meist auf das Streckengleis ausziehen, wobei die Rangierfahrt den sonstigen Zugverkehr blockiert.
