Bis Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts steht der Begriff Bauerngarten ganz allgemein für Gärten, die von Bauern angelegt und bewirtschaftet wurden. Entsprechend dem sozialen bzw. wirtschaftlichen Stand der Bauern fanden so genannte Nutzpflanzen und Platz für Haus-, Hof- und Stalltiere in einem höheren Maß Berücksichtigung, als etwa reine Zierpflanzen und eine Ordnung nach ästhetischen Prinzipien. In der darstellenden Kunst wurde der Bauerngarten gern als ungepflegt im Sinne einer idyllischen Wildnis verklärt. Eine wissenschaftlich definierbare und historisch gewachsene Gartenform mit eigenständigem Typus war er nie.
