Benzoin
(n.) A resinous substance, dry and brittle, obtained from the Styrax benzoin, a tree of Sumatra, Java, etc., having a fragrant odor, and slightly aromatic taste. It is used in the preparation of benzoic acid, in medicine, and as a perfume.

Als Benzoe oder Benzoeharz bezeichnet man das Harz verschiedener Benzoebäume. Zu unterscheiden sind in der Hauptsache die Arten Siam-Benzoe und Sumatra-Benzoe , die beide zu den Storaxbaumgewächsen zählen. Die wildwachsenden immergrünen Bäume werden in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam und Kambodscha geerntet, während Sumatra-Styrax ein regional begrenztes Produkt darstellt. Vom Benzoeharz zu unterscheiden ist das Styraxharz der verwandten Storaxbäume .
