Ein Biofilter ist ein biologisch wirkender Festbettreaktor zur Reinigung von Luft oder Wasser. Es handelt sich hierbei nicht um einen Filter im eigentlichen Sinne, da der Hauptzweck die Abscheidung von gasförmigen bzw. gelösten Substanzen und nicht von festen Partikeln ist. Im Gegensatz zum Biorieselbettreaktor einerseits, bei dem sich auf Einbauten im Reaktor ein sogenannter biologischer Rasen bildet, der kontinuierlich gespült wird, und dem Biowäscher anderseits, bei dem die Mikroorganismen überwiegend in einer Waschflüssigkeit suspendiert sind, sind die Mikroorganismen beim Biofilter auf einer Matrix, die teilweise für die Nährstoffversorgung sorgt, fixiert.
