Die Elementarschule stellt in der deutschen Schulgeschichte eine Form der Volksschule dar. Es ist ein während der Kaiserzeit benutzter Vorgängerbegriff zu unserer heute üblichen Grundschule. Oft wurde dieser Begriff synonym für ?Volksschule? verwendet, aber z. T. steht er auch für Einrichtungen, die nur den Unterricht in den Elementen des Wissens und Könnens gewährten und deshalb Elementarschule geheißen wurden. Auch die Vorschulen der Gymnasien und anderer höherer Schulen, auch zahlreicher Privatschulen bezeichnete man als Elementarschulen. Aufschwung i.Allg. nahm das Volksschulwesen besonders in der Zeit nach der Reformation und die frühesten Schulen dieser Art finden sich in Wittenberg und Gernrode. In letztgenanntem Ort lassen sich heute noch an ursprünglicher Stelle die Räumlichkeiten besuchen und erleben.
