Je nach Art und Aufbau der elektrischen Maschine wirkt entweder die Läufer- oder die Statorwicklung als Erregerwicklung. Der Erregerstrom ist dabei immer ein Gleichstrom, allgemein als bezeichnet. Bei Synchronmaschinen kann zudem über den Erregerstrom das Blindleistungsverhalten der Maschine gesteuert werden.
