Ein Expertensystem enthält die Funktionalität, um die Wissensbasis zu erstellen und zu verbessern , zu verarbeiten und dem Nutzer verständlich zu machen . Expertensysteme sind ein Teilbereich der künstlichen Intelligenz. Beispiele sind Systeme zur Unterstützung medizinischer Diagnosen oder zur Analyse wissenschaftlicher Daten. Die ersten Arbeiten an entsprechender Software erfolgten in den 1960er Jahren. Seit den 1980er Jahren werden Expertensysteme auch kommerziell eingesetzt.
