Sie dient der Aufnahme von Passbildern oder spontanen Erinnerungsbildern. Man findet sie häufig an zentralen Plätzen, in Bahnhöfen, Häfen oder Flugplätzen oder in Freizeitparks und Vergnügungszentren. Inzwischen werden in den meisten Fotoautomaten bereits Digitalkameras verwendet und die Bildentwicklung erfolgt per computergesteuertem Drucker.
