Halbleiter sind Festkörper, deren elektrische Leitfähigkeit zwischen der von elektrischen Leitern und der von Nichtleitern liegt. Da sich die Grenzbereiche der drei Gruppen überschneiden, ist der negative Temperaturkoeffizient des spezifischen Widerstandes ein weiteres wichtiges Merkmal von Halbleitern, das heißt, ihre Leitfähigkeit nimmt mit steigender Temperatur zu, sie sind sogenannte Heißleiter. Ursache hierfür ist die sogenannte Bandlücke zwischen dem Valenz- und dem Leitungsband. Nah am absoluten Temperaturnullpunkt sind diese un- bzw. vollbesetzt und Halbleiter daher Nichtleiter. Es existieren im Gegensatz zu Metallen primär keine freien Ladungsträger, diese müssen erst z. B. durch thermische Anregung entstehen. Die elektrische Leitfähigkeit von Halbleitern steigt aber steil mit der Temperatur an, so dass sie bei Raumtemperatur, je nach materialspezifischem Abstand von Leitungs- und Valenzband, mehr oder weniger leitend sind. Des Weiteren lässt sich durch das Einbringen von Fremdatomen aus einer anderen chemischen Hauptgruppe die Leitfähigkeit und der Leitungscharakter in weiten Grenzen gezielt beeinflussen.
