Die Halligen sind kleine, nicht oder nur wenig geschützte Marschinseln vor den Küsten, die bei Sturmfluten überschwemmt werden können. Sie liegen im nordfriesischen Wattenmeer an der Nordseeküste Schleswig-Holsteins sowie an der Nordseeküste Dänemarks. Die zehn heute noch existierenden, bis 956 Hektar großen deutschen Halligen gruppieren sich kreisförmig um die Insel Pellworm, die selbst keine Hallig ist. Sieben der zehn Halligen sind heute bewohnt.
