Hansestädte sind Städte, die sich dem mittelalterlichen Kaufmanns- und Städtebund der Hanse angeschlossen hatten. Der Verbund der Städte in der Hanse war sehr lose und wurde mit keinem Vertrag o. Ã¤. beschlossen. Deswegen ist schwer zu sagen, welche Städte zu welchem Zeitpunkt zur Hanse gehörten. Auch die Hanse selbst wollte Anzahl und Namen ihrer Städte nie festlegen. So weigerte sie sich zum Beispiel gegenüber dem König von England, eine detaillierte Liste mit Städtenamen vorzulegen ? vielleicht auch deswegen, weil es eine solche Liste nie gab. Viele kleine Hansestädte waren ihrer größeren Nachbarstadt zugeordnet und gehörten dieser Stadt an, die wiederum in der Hanse war.
