Honorarprofessoren sind nebenberufliche Hochschullehrer. Sie müssen mehrere Jahre lang als selbständige Dozenten oder Lehrbeauftragte ihre pädagogische Eignung nachgewiesen haben. Honorarprofessoren führen die Amtsbezeichnung Professor ohne weiteren Zusatz. Sie halten Lehrveranstaltungen ab, können Prüfungen abnehmen und Doktoranden betreuen , sind hauptberuflich aber weiterhin außerhalb der Hochschule tätig. Durch die Bestellung von Honorarprofessoren sollen Personen mit Bezug zur Praxis für die universitäre Lehre gewonnen und dauerhaft eng an die Hochschule gebunden werden.
