Honorarprofessoren sind nebenberufliche Hochschullehrer. Sie müssen mehrere Jahre lang als selbständige Dozenten oder Lehrbeauftragte ihre pädagogische Eignung nachgewiesen haben. Außerdem müssen sie besondere wissenschaftliche oder künstlerische Leistungen erbracht haben. Die Qualifikation der zu bestellenden Persönlichkeit ist in einigen Bundesländern, zum Beispiel in Thüringen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und Nordrhein-Westfalen, durch Gutachten externer Wissenschaftler zu belegen. Honorarprofessoren führen die Amtsbezeichnung Professor ohne weiteren Zusatz. Sie halten Lehrveranstaltungen ab, können Prüfungen abnehmen und Doktoranden betreuen , sind hauptberuflich aber weiterhin außerhalb der Hochschule tätig. Durch die Bestellung von Honorarprofessoren sollen Personen mit Bezug zur Praxis für die universitäre Lehre gewonnen und dauerhaft eng an die Hochschule gebunden werden.
