Horaz , eigentlich Quintus Horatius Flaccus, ist neben Vergil, Properz, Tibull und Ovid einer der bedeutendsten römischen Dichter der ?Augusteischen Zeit?. Seine philosophischen Ansichten und dicta gehörten bis in die Neuzeit zu den bekanntesten des Altertums und erfuhren eine reiche Rezeption in Humanismus und Klassizismus. Horaz trieb die klassische Literatur seiner eigenen Zeit auf eine neue Spitze und war besonders für den englischen Klassizismus das bedeutendste antike Vorbild.
