Hospital bzw. Spital ist eine in weiten Teilen Deutschlands veraltete Bezeichnung für Pflegeheime und Altenheime. Ursprünglich bezeichnete es die meist christlich geführten Pilgerherbergen und Armenhäuser. Daneben kommen in ähnlicher Sinngebung Begriffe wie Seelhaus, Bruderhaus, Pfründe, Siechenhaus, Sondersiechenhaus, Leprosenhaus, Pesthaus oder Blatternhaus vor. In einigen Gegenden Deutschlands und fallweise in Österreich wird noch heute Hospital, in Österreich aber bevorzugt und in der Schweiz fast ausschließlich Spital als Synonym für Krankenhaus verwendet.
