Ikonen sind Kult- und Heiligenbilder der Ostkirchen, besonders der orthodoxen Kirchen des byzantinischen Ritus. Die meist auf Holz gemalten Bilder sind kirchlich geweiht und haben für die Theologie und Spiritualität der Ostkirchen eine sehr große Bedeutung. Der Zweck der Ikonen ist, Ehrfurcht zu erwecken und eine existenzielle Verbindung zwischen dem Betrachter und dem Dargestellten zu sein, indirekt auch zwischen dem Betrachter und Gott. Ikonen werden in der orthodoxen Kirche weder als Kunstgegenstände noch als Dekoration angesehen, sind aber wesentlicher Bestandteil der byzantinischen Kunst. Vereinzelt gibt es Ikonen auch als Hinterglasmalerei.
