Die Vorfahren der Indianer haben Amerika in frühgeschichtlicher Zeit von Asien aus besiedelt und haben dort eine Vielzahl von Kulturen und Sprachen entwickelt. Indianer ist eine Fremdbezeichnung durch die Kolonialisten, eine entsprechende Selbstbezeichnung der weit über zweitausend Gruppen besteht nicht. Allerdings gibt es übergreifende Begriffe in Kanada, in den USA sowie im ehemals spanischen und im portugiesischen Teil Amerikas.
