Sie ist aber nicht einer Infektion gleichzusetzen, da nicht jede Infektion notwendigerweise zu einer Erkrankung führt. Infektionskrankheiten zeigen ein breites Spektrum von zeitlichen Verläufen und Symptomen. Diese sind für den Erreger oftmals spezifisch. Sie können hochakut in wenigen Tagen entstehen oder sich über Wochen, Monate, manchmal Jahre hinweg langsam entwickeln. Es gibt lokalisierte ? also auf konkrete Körpergebiete beschränkte ? und generalisierte Infektionskrankheiten. Einige laufen bei einer nicht immungeschwächten Person nahezu unbemerkt ab oder äußern sich nur in leichten, unspezifischen Störungen des Allgemeinbefindens. Andere Krankheiten entwickeln ein hochdramatisches Krankheitsbild. Auf diese meist schwer verlaufenden, septischen Infektionskrankheiten reagiert der Körper mit einem als systemisches inflammatorisches Response-Syndrom bezeichneten Reaktionsmuster, zu dem Fieber, beschleunigter Puls, erhöhte Atemfrequenz, auch Durst und Ruhebedürfnis gehören. Ausschlaggebend für den Verlauf und die Prognose einer Infektionskrankheit ist die Fähigkeit des Immunsystems, den Erreger zu eliminieren. Die Medizin hält für viele erregerbedingte Krankheiten spezifische Gegenmittel bereit . Gegen einige Erreger gibt es die Möglichkeit der vorbeugenden Impfung. Auch heute können manche Infektionskrankheiten nicht definitiv geheil
