Unter Jugend versteht man die Lebensphase zwischen Kindheit und Erwachsensein. In den einflussreichen ?Shell Jugendstudien? wird Jugend als die Spanne zwischen dem 12. und 25. Lebensjahr definiert. Wegen ihrer Länge wird die Lebensphase Jugend auch oft in Abschnitte untergliedert. Der erste Abschnitt bis zum Alter von 18 Jahren wird als Adoleszenz bezeichnet, wobei bei juristischen Auseinandersetzungen das Jugendrecht zum Tragen kommt. Der englische Begriff Teenager bezieht sich im gleichen Sinn auf den Bereich der englischen Zählwörter, die auf -teen enden: Thirteen, fourteen usw., also den Bereich zwischen 13 und 19 Jahren.
