Jahrhunderts setzten sich gegossene Eisenkugeln durch, doch fanden Steinkugeln als Munition für Schiffskanonen bis weit in die Frühe Neuzeit hinein weiterhin Verwendung. Die Kanonen wurden ursprünglich nicht nach dem Kaliber, sondern nach dem Gewicht ihrer Kugeln eingeteilt, vom 6-Pfünder bis zu 32-Pfünder und mehr.
