Unter Komparatistik versteht man die Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft, in einigen Fällen auch enger nur die Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft. Die Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft ist die Wissenschaft von den Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschieden der Literaturen verschiedener Kulturen in grenzüberschreitender Perspektive. Sie bedient sich hierzu der Methode des Vergleichs. Die Allgemeine Literaturwissenschaft schließt alle Felder der Literaturtheorie ein, beispielsweise Ästhetik, Rhetorik oder Narratologie.
