Es sind die größten von Lebewesen geschaffenen Strukturen der Erde. Die Gesamtfläche der heutigen Korallenriffe liegt bei 600.000 km², bei den Malediven erheben sich die Riffe bis zu 2200 Meter über den Meeresboden.
