Die Kuckucksuhr wird traditionell vor allem im Schwarzwald gefertigt. Sie hat weltweiten Bekanntheitsgrad erlangt. Häufig handelt es sich um eine Wanduhr, deren mechanisches Pendelwerk mit Kettenzug und Schlagwerk ausgestattet ist. Die Grundform des Gehäuses ist seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts meist einem Bahnwärterhäuschen mit Schrägdach nachempfunden und mit mehr oder weniger aufwendig geschnitzten Holzornamenten verziert. Die eigentliche namensgebende Besonderheit der Kuckucksuhr besteht jedoch im Schlagwerk. Als akustisches Zeitsignal dient ein mechanischer Kuckuck, der beweglich im Gehäuse hinter einer türähnlichen Klappe über dem Zifferblatt angebracht ist, und meist zur jeden vollen Stunde heraus geschwenkt wird. Zusätzlich ertönen dazu ein oder mehrere Kuckucksrufe, zur vollen Stunde je nach Anzahl der Stunden , meist zusammen mit einem Gong.
