Die Kulturheidelbeeren sind mit großer Sortenvielfalt durch Züchtungen aus Pflanzenarten der Untergattung oder Sektion Cyanococcus in der Gattung der Heidelbeeren hervorgegangen. Heidelbeeren gehören zur Pflanzenfamilie der Heidekrautgewächse . Kulturheidelbeeren stammen nicht, wie häufig angenommen, von der in Europa heimischen Heidel-, Blau- oder Waldheidelbeere ab, deren Früchte Mund und Lippen beim Verzehr blau färben, sondern sind nordamerikanischen Ursprungs. Die färbenden Anthocyane befinden sich bei ihnen in der Fruchtschale der fast kugelrunden, blauen Beeren; ihr Fruchtfleisch ist weiß.
