Die chinesische Kulturrevolution war eine politische Kampagne zwischen 1966 und 1976, die von Mao Zedong ausgelöst wurde. Zunächst wurde die Kulturrevolution als eine Bewegung zur Beseitigung von Missständen in Staat und Gesellschaft von großen Teilen der Bevölkerung begrüßt. Mao setzte jedoch statt der von Politikern wie Liu Shaoqi gewünschten Erneuerung innerhalb der Kommunistischen Partei Chinas eine Massenbewegung zur Zerstörung der alten KPCh in Gang. Die meisten der alten Kader wurden ihrer Ämter enthoben. Nur 28 % der Politbüro- und 34 % der ZK-Mitglieder sowie 29 % der Provinzsekretäre konnten sich bis Ende 1966 in ihrer Position halten.
