Lateinamerika ist ein politisch-kultureller Begriff, der dazu dient, die spanisch- und portugiesischsprachigen Länder Amerikas von den englischsprachigen Ländern Amerikas abzugrenzen. In der heute üblichen Definition des Begriffs werden zu Lateinamerika nur die Länder gezählt, in denen das Spanische oder das Portugiesische vorherrscht. Dazu gehören Mexiko, Zentralamerika , die spanischsprachigen Gebiete der Karibik sowie die Länder Südamerikas . Die Länder Lateinamerikas haben zusammen eine Fläche von etwa 20 Millionen km², und die Bevölkerung umfasst rund 500 Millionen Menschen.
