Luftwurzeln werden meist von epiphytischen Pflanzen ausgebildet. Sie dienen der Wasser- und Nährstoffaufnahme aus der Luft und z. T. der Fixierung auf dem Substrat. Diese Wurzeln umgibt z. B. bei Orchideen eine Velamen radicum genannte, schwammartige Zellschicht. Bei Regen oder durch hohe Luftfeuchtigkeit saugen sich diese Zellen mit Wasser voll. Im zweiten Bild ist der Querschnitt einer Orchideen-Luftwurzel in ca. 400-facher Vergrößerung dargestellt. Die rot eingefärbten Zellen sind verholzt und durchlässig und ermöglichen es den Nährstoffen und Feuchtigkeit, in die Wurzel einzudringen.
