Macht bezeichnet sozialwissenschaftlich einerseits die Fähigkeit einer Person oder Interessengruppe, auf das Verhalten und Denken einzelner Personen, sozialer Gruppen oder Bevölkerungsteile einzuwirken. Andererseits stellt eine Extremposition der Macht die Fähigkeit dar, einseitig definierte Ziele zu erreichen, ohne sich selbst äußeren Ansprüchen gegenüber beteiligten Personen zu unterwerfen oder diesen entgegenkommen zu müssen. Dies ist bei Vorliegen der Möglichkeit einer Einflussnahme mittels Strafandrohung der Fall, wobei auf die Zielpersonen ein unterdrückender Zwang ausgeübt wird, sich zu fügen. Im Falle von gegensätzlichen oder unvereinbaren Interessenpositionen der Zielpersonen ist es daher beispielsweise für Personen, die absolute Macht ausüben, nicht erforderlich, ein Austauschverhältnis oder einen Kompromiss einzugehen. Vor allem diesbezüglich grenzen sich die in weiten Teilen deckungsgleichen Begriffe Macht und Einfluss voneinander ab, wobei die Übergänge fließend sind. Die beiden Sichtweisen werden auch als ?Macht über? haben? und ?Macht zu tun? umschrieben. Als zentraler Begriff der Sozialwissenschaften ist Macht in seinem Bedeutungsumfang umstritten.
