Unter der Sammelbezeichnung Mittelschicht, besonders in der Schweiz auch Mittelstand genannt, versteht man diejenigen Bevölkerungsgruppen, die innerhalb eines sozialen Schichtungs-Modells in der Sozialstruktur zwischen einer Oberschicht und einer Unterschicht angesiedelt sind. Es gibt vielfältige Konzepte der Schichtungen und keine abschließende, überall anerkannte Definition der Schicht im soziologischen Sinne. Daher gibt es auch zahlreiche Vorstellungen von Mittelschicht. ? Im angloamerikanischen Sprachraum wird sie als middle class bezeichnet.
