Unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen können die Nebenspannungen erhebliche Werte annehmen, wenn beispielsweise ein gedrückter Fachwerkstab zu Knicken droht und durch weitere Stäbe gestützt werden muss. Konstruktiv löst man diese Stützfunktion durch den Einbau eines Nullstabes in das Fachwerk, welcher die Nebenspannung aufnimmt.
