Dieses Organsystem der Eumetazoa übernimmt die Aufgabe, Veränderungen der äußeren Umwelt und inneren Umgebung eines Organismus als Signal aufzunehmen, aufeinander zu beziehen und mit früheren zu vergleichen, um eventuell Veränderungen des Organismus als Reaktionen zu veranlassen, mit denen eine bessere Anpassung an wechselnde Umgebungsbedingungen möglich wird. Damit realisiert das Nervensystem eines vielzelligen tierischen Lebewesens dessen Reizbarkeit und Erregbarkeit als Grundeigenschaften seines Lebens.
