Ofenkacheln sind die namensgebenden Bestandteile des Kachelofens. Sie bestehen immer aus gebranntem Ton und gehören damit zur Keramik. Aufgrund ihrer hohen Wärmekapazität speichern Ofenkacheln ? ebenso wie der Ofenlehm beziehungsweise ab dem späten 19. Jahrhundert die innere Schamotte-Auskleidung des Ofens ? große Mengen von Wärmeenergie und erwärmen damit den umgebenden Raum noch einige Zeit nach dem Erlöschen des Ofenfeuers. Sie dienen weiterhin der Dekoration und besitzen aufgrund ihrer Glasur gute Reinigungseigenschaften.
