Ein Orchester ist ein größer besetztes Instrumentalensemble, das dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, dass zumindest einzelne Stimmen mehrfach besetzt sind. Im Bereich der klassischen Musik unterscheidet man das groĂź besetzte Sinfonieorchester vom kleineren Kammerorchester. Daneben gibt es Orchester, die nur aus Instrumenten einer bestimmten Gattung bestehen, z. B. Blasorchester, Streichorchester, Zupforchester oder das Gamelan Indonesiens. Jazz-Orchester und ähnliche Formationen der Tanz- und Unterhaltungsmusik werden meist als Big Band bezeichnet.
