Das Pelagial ist bei Seen und dem Meer der uferferne Freiwasserbereich oberhalb der Bodenzone . Bei Seen reicht es von der Seemitte zum Ufer hin bis zu den ersten wurzelnden Wasserpflanzen. Im Meer wird mit Pelagial die küstenferne Hochsee, d. h. das offene Meer, bezeichnet. Sedimentgesteine, von denen eine ähnliche Entstehungsumgebung angenommen wird, werden als pelagische Sedimentite bezeichnet.
