Der Pharmaberater benötigt ein umfangreiches medizinisches und pharmazeutisches Wissen sowie genaue Kenntnisse über die Produktpalette seines Unternehmens sowie Kenntnisse jener Produkte, die dazu im Wettbewerb stehen. Als persönliche Voraussetzungen gelten Selbstbewusstsein, ein gepflegtes Äußeres, eine gute verbale und nicht-verbale Kommunikationsfähigkeit sowie fast immer ein Führerschein.
