Der Sozialdarwinismus gilt seit den 1920er Jahren als überholt, beeinflusste aber bis dahin die sozialpolitischen Diskussionen in erheblichem Maße, indem er Rassismus und Kolonialismus wissenschaftlich zu legitimieren versuchte. Er diente darüber hinaus als ideologische Basis der Eugenik.
