Da dieses Gelenk vor allem durch Muskulatur gesichert ist und die Bewegungen kaum durch knöcherne Strukturen eingeschränkt werden, ist es das beweglichste Kugelgelenk des menschlichen Körpers. Dadurch sind aber Ausrenkungen der Schulter relativ häufig, ebenso wie Muskel- und Sehnenrisse im Bereich der Rotatorenmanschette.
