Solche Skigebiete befinden sich meistens im Hochgebirge, d. h. über etwa 2500 m, und auf Gletschern. Sie verfügen im Allgemeinen nur über wenige Liftanlagen, sind aber das Herzstück des ganzen Skigebiets.
