Jahrhundert gründete man viele Strafkolonien fernab vom jeweiligen Mutterland, wie z. B. in Sibirien, Französisch-Guyana und speziell auf kleinen Inseln, um die Flucht von Gefangenen zu erschweren oder unattraktiv zu machen.
