Mit einem solchen Verfahren ist es beispielsweise möglich, die Verteilung mechanischer Spannungen in einem Bauteil aus Glas oder Acryl zu kontrollieren. Durch Tempern ist es aber auch möglich, gezielt die Struktur eines Festkörpers zu ändern, beispielsweise das Gefüge bei Bauteilen aus Gusseisen oder die Umwandlung der Kristallstruktur von dünnen Schichten.
