Als Tierschutz werden alle Aktivitäten des Menschen bezeichnet, die darauf abzielen, Tieren individuell ein artgerechtes Leben ohne Zufügung von Leiden, Schmerzen, Schäden und unnötigen Beeinträchtigungen zu ermöglichen. Der Tierschutz zielt auf das einzelne Tier und seine Unversehrtheit. Im Unterschied zu den Vertretern so genannter Tierrechte, die teilweise jegliche Nutzhaltung von Tieren durch den Menschen ablehnen, liegt im Tierschutz und den zugehörigen rechtlichen Regelungen im Tierschutzrecht der Schwerpunkt auf der sach- und artgerechten Haltung und Nutzung von Tieren durch den Menschen bzw. auf dem sach- und artgerechten Umgang mit Tieren. Aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Nutzungsweise begrenzt sich die Tierschutzbewegung zumeist auf regional den Menschen vertraute und sympathische Wirbel- und Säugetiere.
