Eine Torte ist eine feine Backware. Sie besteht aus einer oder mehreren horizontalen Schichten vorher gebackenen Tortenbodens, der nach dem Backen mit Creme gefüllt oder belegt wird. Anschließend kann die Torte noch mit Tortenguss, Creme oder auch einer Glasur überzogen und weiter ausverziert werden. Bisweilen wird in Rezepten für die Torte der französische Ausdruck Tarte verwendet, der aber auch Backwaren bezeichnet, die der Definition eines Kuchens entsprechen.
