Die Treuhandanstalt war eine in der Spätphase der DDR gegründete bundesunmittelbare Anstalt des öffentlichen Rechts in Deutschland, deren Aufgabe es war, die Volkseigenen Betriebe der DDR nach den Grundsätzen der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft zu privatisieren und die ?Effizienz und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der Unternehmen zu sichern? oder, wenn das nicht möglich war, stillzulegen. Im Umfeld der Privatisierung kam es zu Fällen von Fördermittelmissbrauch und Wirtschaftskriminalität. Zum 1. Januar 1995 wurde die Treuhandanstalt in Bundesanstalt für vereinigungsbedingte Sonderaufgaben umbenannt.
