Eine Trompe ist ein eckständiger nischenförmiger Gewölbezwickel mit nach unten gekehrter Öffnung. Trompen dienen in der Baukunst dazu, eine Bauform mit quadratischem Grundriss in eine oktogonale und letztlich kreisförmige überzuleiten und dabei statisch-konstruktiv zu stützen ? beispielsweise die Vierung eines Kirchengebäudes im Übergang zur Kuppel.
