Unter einer Virusinfektion versteht man das aktive oder passive Eindringen von Viren in einen Organismus wie Pflanze, Tier oder Mensch und deren Vermehrung dort. Die in der Regel darauf folgende Reaktion des Organismus kann sich in einer Infektionskrankheit äußern. Viren sind nur innerhalb von Wirtszellen vermehrungsfähig, nicht aber für sich selbst außerhalb von Wirtszellen. Dabei bevorzugt jede Virusart eine mehr oder weniger große Bandbreite bestimmter Zellen, Organe und Lebewesen in die sie eindringen und sich vermehren. Die infizierte und zur Virusvermehrung umfunktionierte Zelle kann vom Immunsystem als solche erkannt und zum Absterben gebracht werden. Hieraus resultiert eine Entzündung, die weitere Zellen schädigen und zu einer für diese Virusart typischen Erkrankung führen kann.
