Der Wurzelhals ist zum einen mit einer Sprossepidermis bedeckt, diese bildet häufig Wurzelhalsrhizoiden . Wurzelhalsrhizoide verankern den Sämling in der Erde und sind meist länger und langlebiger als die ansonsten ähnlichen Wurzelhaare.
