Als Zebra werden die drei Arten Grevyzebra , Bergzebra und Steppenzebra aus der Gattung der Pferde bezeichnet. Untersuchungen von aDNA legen nahe, dass Zebras kein natürliches Taxon bilden. So sind Bergzebras eher mit dem afrikanischen Wildesel verwandt und Grevyzebras der Gruppe des Kiang und asiatischen Esels zugehörig. Demzufolge ist das charakteristische Streifenmuster entweder mehrmals konvergent entstanden oder von einem gemeinsamen Vorfahren vererbt und bei den verwandten anderen Wildeseln wieder verloren gegangen.
