Telemark is a county in Norway, bordering Vestfold, Buskerud, Hordaland, Rogaland and Aust-Agder. The county administration is in Skien. Until 1919 the county was known as Bratsberg amt. The name means the "mark of the thelir," the ancient Germanic tribe that inhabited what is now known as Upper Telemark since the Migration Period. Historically the name Telemark only referred to Upper Telemark, while Grenland was considered a separate region.
