Er wird bei alkoholischen Getränken meist in Volumenprozent angegeben, früher Einheiten waren das Grad Stoppani, das Grad Tralles, das Grad Gay-Lussac und das Grad Sikes. Da Alkohol eine wesentlich geringere Dichte als Wasser besitzt, ist die Volumenprozentzahl höher als die Gewichtsprozentzahl. Die Bestimmung des Alkoholgehalts nennt man Alkoholometrie.
